North Carolina Happenings
The Convenor for North Carolina, Joyce Kight, is pleased to announce that there will be a House of Boyd Tent at The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. It is a four-day event starting on Thursday evening, July 11, 2024, with the torchlight ceremony. The busiest day is Saturday, but Friday-Sunday is packed with activities and fun, including the Scottish Cultural Village, Music Groves, Pipe Bands, individual competitions, sheep herding, Donald’s Gaelic Ceilidh Tent, where you can learn easy-to-say expressions in the Gaelic language, Scottish fiddle-competition, and The Clarsach competition. The Clarsach is the ancient word for the small (non-pedal) harp. There will also be Whisky Tasting and Scottish foods to enjoy.
There is also the Highland Athletic competition, which is a series of six events, and the competitor must complete all six. These include competitive events such as the Hammer Throw, Weight Toss for Height, and the Sheaf Toss. The Caber Toss is perhaps one of the most iconic events, and the athletes’ goal is to flip the log so that it falls in the '12 o'clock position. A Competitive Spirit continues with Track and Field events and, for the Clans, a Tug-of-War on Sunday.
MacRae Meadows on Grandfather Mountain will become a pageant of color at 11:30 AM on Sunday when more than 1,000 marchers clad in Scottish attire and representing over 100 clans and societies march around the track in the annual “Parade of Tartans.”
Advance tickets are available at https://sambas.idloom.events/2024_GMHG.

Tartan Day New York City Parade
Join House of Boyd Society in representing the clan at the New Your City Tartan Day Parade. Melanie Gustin is again coordinating our effort to participate in this event.
New York City Tartan Day Parade always takes place on the weekend around April 6th, which is the Tartan Day proclaimed in the United States to honor its Scottish heritage. Hundreds of thousands of spectators line the streets to watch the procession on Sixth Avenue from 44th to 55th Streets featuring hundreds of bagpipers, dancers, thousands of marchers, and dozens of floats dedicated to Scotland.
The parade begins at 2 pm. This day is a culmination of the Tartan Week that also includes a series of cocktail parties, dances, readings, concerts, and performances. The Tartan Day dates back to 1998 when the U.S. Senate recognized the contributions made by Scottish-Americans to the United States. In 1999, the first parade took place in NYC with just two pipe bands marching from the British Consulate to the UN building.
The National Tartan Day New York Committee is honored to announce award-winning Scottish actress Karen Gillan as Grand Marshal of the 2022 New York City Tartan Day Parade.
